Overworlds and Underworlds – Leeds Canvas
So, from 18 – 20 May I was trapped in an ethereal world I didn’t realise could exist in a bustling, sparkling city like Leeds. No, I haven’t gone all prosaic whilst on a sugar-high – I was a contributing artist to the Overworlds and Underworlds event in Leeds, organised by Leeds Canvas and part of the Cultural Olympiad to mark the 2012 Olympics in London.
The artistic leaders of it all were The Quay Brothers, known internationally for their darkly delicious stop-motion animation. They were given free-reign with the city of Leeds and its creative resources, pulling in dancers, singers, performers, and visual artists for a weekend of bizarre encounters, mysterious journeys, and uplifting revelations in the Dark Arches.
Not the best photos in the world but these were as many as I could take of the strange chalk drawings I was asked to produce. I also did two typography installations before the big weekend as a teaser.
